June 13, 2016
As Chairman of the Mississippi County Juneteenth Celebration, I cordially invite the city officials, and all residents of Mississippi County, AR to join us as we celebrate the day of emancipation.
Historically, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom for the African American heritage. Although Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, many slaves did not find out they were free until 2.5 years later on June 19th, 1865. We look forward to celebrating this historic tradition, as we give homage to the ones that came before us.
This celebration will be Saturday, June 18, 2016. We will kick off with the annual parade with Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Ford as Grand Marshalls. The Big Celebration will be at the corner of Elm & McHaney Streets from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Citizens are welcome to enjoy the activities and free food that will be available.
Not only is this a day of celebration, but should be marked as a day of unity, prayer, and peacefulness for the citizens of our county.
We look forward to seeing each and everyone at this great event.
